AI creates images. Designers create meaning.

Artificial intelligence is a tool that can improve business efficiency by summarizing meeting notes, organizing schedules, editing marketing copy or generating ideas in seconds.

Though it may seem like a cost-effective shortcut, an AI-generated logo may cause bigger branding problems down the road, and those platforms are not always free, sometimes charging you per prompt or per render.

Before I even begin sketching logo concepts, I spend time learning about the business behind it, shaping every design decision. Artificial intelligence simply generates visuals based on patterns it has learned from millions of existing designs.

Seconds after typing, “create a modern, minimalistic logo for a construction company,” dozens of attractive options appear. The problem? Thousands of other people are using nearly identical prompts, receiving logos that rely on the same AI-engineer fed trends, symbols, fonts and layouts — giving them the same logo designs that it gave you, and sometimes violating legal copyrights.

If lots of accounting firms, lawyers or home builders have the same or similar geometric icons, customers stop noticing. In addition, practical considerations are often overlooked when generating artwork with AI:

Can it be embroidered on a polo shirt? Remember, you get charged per thread color.

Will it remain readable when printed on a business card?

It it legible rendered in black-and-white, or just one color? Like your trade show pens.

Will it be clear on large signage, or small social media profile avatar images?

Is it recognizable on a vehicle wrap? Especially when looking at it going top speed on the beltway?

You’ll spend more money fixing it later.

After discovering that your AI-generated logo doesn’t reproduce well, lacks originality or doesn’t fit the direction of the company, then you hire a graphic designer to redesign it — now you’ve paid twice.

Investing in thoughtful logo design from the beginning is usually less expensive than correcting mistakes later in all of your marketing materials.

People don’t build relationships with algorithms, they build relationships with businesses they trust.
